Outside Support

After visiting the EZLN, Zack de la Rocha, the lead singer for Rage Against the Machine, penned a song entitled "People of the Sun." The lyrics tell the story of the Indigenous since the time of Spanish colonization. The video of the song incorporates the story of the EZLNin the opening scenes. Indigenous people, not just in Mexico, but on the American continent have been subject to oppression throughout history since colonization. Members of the EZLN revolution are just one more group of indigenous people in this long history of oppression. “People of the Sun” sheds light on this issue which, still to this very day, does not get the attention that it deserves. Within the lyrics of the song, there is a sense of support for the revolution by the indigenous. Zack de la Rocha sings about the negative effects that the capitalist system has had on these people. The chorus displays a sense of urgency that the time has come for the indigenous to take back their history and demand the same kind of equality as the colonizers. The song is a rally cry, not just for the EZLN, but for all indigenous across Latin America.
In this documentary by VICE news, interviews with nonmembers who witnessed the seizing of towns by the EZLN in 1994 add outside views on the revolution. The people are reflecting on this event and how it has changed at the twenty year mark. The people who are interviewed are journalist who felt the need to tell the story of the EZLN revolution as it was happening in real time. Vice news, through this documentary, is trying to get a perspective on this revolution that can only come from those people who were witnessing this new revolution that put a new face on the idea of a revolution in a post-Communist world. Besides the journalist, the documentary also includes commentary from a Catholic priest who helped mediate the talks between the Mexican government and the EZLN in 1994. These dialogues helped to make the demands of the EZLN clear to the Mexican government and to the population of the country. These interviewees, through the reflection on this turbulent time in Mexico’s history, helps to provide a clearer picture to how this revolution took place and how people in Mexico who were not part of the revolution felt about these events in 1994.

Picture
The musician Zack de la Rocha, who is the lead singer for the band Rage Against the Machine, is known for his avid support for revolutionary groups, like the EZLN. In this picture to the left, which was taken at the Woodstock concert in 1999, the singer can be seen wearing an armband that represents the Mexican indigenous group. The red star on a black background is the flag of the EZLN. This one simple armband would bring the group to the attention of the hundreds of thousands of people in attendance for the massive outdoor festival. While Rocha was not a participant in any parts of the revolution in the Mexican state of Chiapas, he wanted more people to support the fight for indigenous rights. A person with status of de la Rocha could bring a wider support network to the group by simply being a famous musician in America with listeners across the world. This picture shows that the EZLN did have some international supporters in other countries. Zack de la Rocha, by wearing this article of clothing, showed that the rights of indigenous people, whether in Mexico or across the world, had to be won in order to respect the legacy of these people.
